Jim Sammons
Owner: La Jolla Kayak Fishing Adventures and East Cape Kayak Fishing
A San Diego California native, Jim has spent most of his life on or near
the water. Whether, during his youth, paddling his inflatable raft on
San Diego bay, pin heading for free trips on the local sport boats or
paddling his long board out to the kelp beds of La Jolla. Jim always
found a way to get on the water in a manner that would not break his
very small bank account. Receiving his first kayak as a gift, he has
never looked back; starting La Jolla Kayak Fishing guide service in
1996, he has been on the leading edge of this fast growing sport.
Jim holds the distinction of landing the first, and only California
caught Marlin from a kayak as well as Striped Marlin and Sail Fish in
Baja. Jim also holds the current record for the largest Dorado from a
kayak, a bull of over 60 pounds. He has also landed Thresher sharks up
to two hundred pounds and a personal best Yellowtail of forty-one pounds
all while fishing the La Jolla coast from his Ocean Kayak.
Jim started running group kayak fishing trips to the Hotel Punta
Colorada, one of the Van Wormer resorts, in 2002. With the help of the
local fishing captains he quickly developed a formula to get his clients
on their fish of a lifetime, capturing many of these catches on video.
In early 2008 was asked to also run the kayak fishing operation at the
hotel Rancho Leonero also located in the East Cape region of Baja. With
the three hotels owned by Van Wormer Resorts, Punta Colorada, Palmas de
Cortez and Play Del Sol, and now Rancho Leonero he will be representing
and guiding trips to the premier kayak fishing destinations in Baja and
perhaps the world. Working with some of the finest kayak fishing guides
in the country Jim started East Cape Kayak Fishing to bring his clients
the finest and most professional kayak fishing experience available.
Jim is an IGFA certified, and California Department of Fish and game
licensed guide and runs La Jolla Kayak Fishing instructional trips
locally as well as guiding trips to Baja and other exotic locations
through his business East Cape Kayak Fishing. A contributing writer
with several fishing publications Jim loves the opportunity to give tips
and relay stories of successful kayak fishing adventures. Kayak fishing
is Jim's passion; addiction or some would a say sickness with no cure.
He has managed to turn that passion into a career while helping others
get into the sport.

Jeff "Rhyno" Krieger
Owner: RhynoBar.com
A La Jolla Kayak Fishing affiliate
Born and raised on the island of Oahu, Jeff was introduced to the ocean
at an early age. At his island home he learned to paddle outrigger
canoes, kayaks or anything else that would get him on the water. Of
course, that is also, where he got his first taste of fishing. The
Krieger family relocated to the mainland in 1972 settling in Santa
Barbara. One of the original, modern day kayak anglers, Jeff
started guiding in 1990.
Jeff has been featured in two episodes of the Inside Sportfishing
television show, Threshers Yak Style and Marlin from the Kayak, winning
the Telly award for “Special Guest Host”, for the Thresher
video.
Jeff will be giving kayak fishing tips and reports on, "Western
Fishing and Boating Radio Show" on am 1540, heard every Thursday
night, 8-10 Pm, in the Los Angeles area starting Jan 2005. A regular
seminar speaker at the Fred Hall Boat and tackle shows, and many fishing
clubs, Jeff loves spreading the word about our sport through speaking
engagements or via the articles he has written for publications such as
Western Outdoor News, Pacific Coast Sportfishing, Rabid Angler and
others.
A CDF&G licensed guide and member of IGFA; Jeff is featured in the
book, "Kayak Fishing the Revolution", by Ken Daubert.
Known throughout the kayak fishing community as Rhyno, he owns, and
Rhyno's Guide Service. Seeing a need for a strong rod holder for his big
game fishing adventures, he invented the Rhynobar in 1995
Some of Rhyno's more memorable catches from the kayak include, Striped
Marlin and Roosterfish in Baja (Thanks Jim and Hotel Punta Colorada),
50lb California Halibut, and 50+ lb White Seabass. Jeff has made a real
name for himself for catching Thresher Sharks to 250 lbs, bigger ones
were let go!
Jeff will be guiding kayak fishing adventures from entry level to
advanced in the Los Angeles area, as well as his yearly groups trip to
northern California. He also makes a yearly trip back to the islands
where he guides a few clients.
Jeff can be reached via his Web site
RhynoBar.com
or on the La Jolla Kayak Fishing forums where he will be answering questions
for our readers. You can also book a trip with Jeff through the La Jolla
Kayak Fishing office
Sean White
Raised near the banks of the American, Sean spent nearly every waking
hour of his childhood chasing fish in the river. Sean realized his
dream of chasing fish professionally after receiving his degree in
Fisheries Biology from Humboldt State University in 1991.
Sean bought a kayak in 2001 as a "temporary measure" to fill a void
after selling his power boat. The temporary measure instantly became an
obsession and has become a lifestyle for Sean and the rest of the White
family. Sean and his wife Leah opened the Great White Kayak Company in
2003. Sean and Leah also host two of the largest kayak fishing
tournaments in NorCal including the "Elk Rockfish Fiesta" and "Bendo at
Mendo". Sean is also a California Department of Fish and Game licensed
guide.
As a life-long Northern California resident Sean spends a lot of time
kayak fishing for cold-water species such as striped bass, steelhead,
lingcod, and halibut. However, the entire White family makes extended
annual excursion to Mexico to soak their feet in warm water and target
Baja's amazing assortment of incredible game fish. While kayak fishing
in warmer waters Sean has caught tuna, roosterfish, yellowtail, jack
crevalle, dorado, pargo, mullet snapper, and sierra mackerel.
While Sean enjoys hanging a big fish himself, nothing makes him happier
than putting kids on their first trophy. Sean has successfully guided
kids to quality dorado, jacks, pargo, mullet snapper, skipjack,
stripers, and largemouth. Sean believes that these early positive
experiences lay a strong foundation toward creating active youth with a
love of the outdoors.
Mark Pierpont
Having grown up fishing the waters of Malibu, backpacking and fishing
the mountains of southern California; Mark has always been close to the
water. It wasn't until he bought his first kayak in 1996 that his
fishing career truly exploded. Since then Mark has spent countless days
on the water perfecting his kayak fishing skills. Mark travels
extensively to fish in such countries as Costa Rica, Belize, Panama,
Guatemala and Mexico. For the last four years Mark has shared these
skills with other anglers as a guide. He finds great satisfaction
putting others on fish.
